Feedback

We showed our completed music video to the class, the majority of the feedback is positive on our music video:
Positives:
  • Our class liked the editing as it when the beat of the song.
  • Our costume related to the genre of the song and the artist.
  • My performance was good.
  • The effects, transitions and location also went well with the song and the genre.

Negatives
  • The class thought that our video should be filmed at night to make our video look even darker, however we couldn't as we didn't have the lighting equipment that we needed, thats why we adjusted the colouring to make it more daunting.

Editing

Today we started to edit, we used Final Cut Program to edit our music video. We organised our clips to things that was going to be used and things that was going to deleted.

Filming - Part 1

Today we filmed the music video but there was only one location because of the lack of time because of it getting dark early. The second location is going to filmed next week also because of the actress changing we didn't add the red contacts. We decided to represent the wolf in the music video through the emotions of the actress. The actress changed twice from a cream dress to show the angel like and innocence then into the black dress into the animal like wolf.

Reece - Update

Location: Epping Forest

By visiting our chosen location for our music video, it made it so much easier for us to understand where our main character would be standing and using in parts of the location. By visiting the park it gave a really clear vision of where and what exactly our character would be doing and what special effect would be appropriate to use at certain places at the park. The images below and on the right are where our main character will be standing and syncing, we decided to use this in a part of our music video because this is going to take place in one of the pre choruses of the song of ‘Remember When’.

Here we are also going to have the actress sit down on the long looking upset on her own, this is to connote that she is on her own, that’s why we decided to use an isolated location for different parts of our music video. When looking at our location we found an appropriate place where our two characters would have a flashback because in the lyrics it is stated that “If only you could only see the beast you’ve made of me, I held it in but now it seems you’ve set it running free” we thought that this old dead tree would be suitable for the theme we are going for our music video. This is sort of an isolated place where after the flashback our main actress will be reminiscing the old days (flack back) looking upset.

Throughout the music video our actress will be walking through the woods, we figured out how these place places would be perfect for our fast-forwarded effect, focus and blur effect and extreme close up on our actress face to show her emotions.

 Graveyard

This location for the graveyard was perfect because it matches the forest location and the whole “howl” nature theme we were going for. This exact spot shown on the image will be where our actress will be starring at the moon and with makeup look like she’s transforming into a wolf because the lyrics “You are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to howl …” We wanted to give a twisted meaning to the video and have the audience question on why she is in the graveyard.

Team Meeting

Today we decided on the day of filming for our music video which then lead us to sepearate tasks for each person in the group like getting equipment required for the video e.g. props like dress, red contacts. We also decided on styling the actress ourselves, and also decided on bringing extra things for the camera like batteries.

Camera

Camera

We were shown how to use a camera and the different functions. We learnt the different functions of the camera like the focus, blur etc. In our group we go to experiment with the camera. What we decided to do with the camera is to get someone behind another person, focus on the person in front and blur the person in the back. This is useful to show the person’s emotions because it looked like as if the person behind were the cause of the actress’s emotions.

Editing

Editing

We were shown how to edit a short film in lesson. Although we are doing a music video we were shown the different techniques to edit on the apple computer. We used software called Final Cut Pro which helped us do basic edits, transitions, text and sound enhancements. We put the short film together by using all the techniques we learnt on the day. This lesson helped us to learn how edit for our music video and how the transitions go smoothly throughout the video.

Case Studies

Katy Perry – Promise Me

Over the shoulder shot

At the beginning there is a shot of Katy Perry in the car listening to the radio. The radio is as if it’s saying what she’s thinking. For example “one day he said he wants to have kids with me”. The camera then zooms into the necklace she’s holding in her hand while listening to this radio is of her and her boyfriend. This shows us the audience she’s thinking and doubting her life with him. This is effective because it tells us the audience what is going on without being too obvious.

Close up:
The camera then shows us her point of view while she’s in the car showing us that she’s outside her boyfriend’s workplace and sees him cheating. This shot is effective because it shows us her view and makes us want to know what may occur because he isn’t faithful to her and the lyrics explain how she is feeling.
Over the shoulder shot:

This is effective because it shows us her facial expressions. This was useful because when they were having a conversation while they argued and you can see both of their reactions. This shot was really fast this was also effective because it built tensions for us the audience wanting to know what was going to occur.
Long shot:

This was effective because it showed us Katy Perry’s character trying to leave but her boyfriend wont let. This shows the struggle of her leaving but it makes us the audience feel like were watching from other peoples point view as if everyone is watching the fight between them. By her walking out of the place and it tells us the audience that she’s leaving behind her past.
Over the shoulder shot

This shot was effective because it shows us that she is running away and is starting fresh. We know this because the lyrics in the song say “pack my bags” and that she is driving to her new life.

Establishing shot

This was crucial because it shows us where she has drove to and where the next scene is going to take place. This tells us the audience were she has driven to.
This close up of this advertisement in the petrol station shows us the audience that this is the new beginning for the character. This is also the point of view of the character. Which makes us the audience this will she become a marine and join the army.
Extreme close up
This extreme close up shows us the audience the facial expression of the character. This is effective because we know that she is interested in the advertisement in the petrol station and this is the beginning of her new life far from her old life.

Over the shoulder shot
This shot is effective because she doesn’t want to look beautiful and she is doing this by cutting her hair and getting rid of anything that may attract men. She starts this by cutting her hair and wrapping her chest in bandages. This shows how effected she may of been because of that fact this character is crying and is very emotional by the close up of her facial expressions.
This shows the transformation of how she has changing from the person she was before and after. This is extremely effective and has been portrayed through the shot by showing us how she has changed her costume, hair etc and has gone against the usual opinion of beauty.
This shot was effective because it has shown us the audience she has decided to take part in the marine and start over without her ex boyfriend.

Extreme close up

Lana Del Rey – summertime sadness

Establishing Shot
This music video starts with an establishing shot showing us that the video is going to take place in a forest like place with a lake. This is effective because it shows us the audience where the setting is.

The camera shot used throughout this video is like a homemade effect as if the two characters including Lana Del Rey are recording each other and showing us the audience the past. Showing us the audience how close
they are and how they have lots of memories together

Christian Imagery

There is a lot of Christian imagery in this video. At the beginning it shows us someone jumping off a cliff of the mountain in the forest with their arms out like Jesus on the cross. Then it shows us the image of the cross. Both characters both commit suicide and we know this because it's told throughout the music video like a story.

Close up

Also there is close up to show their facial expressions and this is effective because it shows how they was happy at the beginning then it changed and the other character started becoming upset. We know this because at the beginning there is a shot of them both laughing in the car then is soon changed during the end of the video. This is effective and this influenced me to do this in my music video because it shows the audience the intensity of the characters emotions through their facial expressions.

They also slowed down the shot of them both falling and this was effective because we saw them falling the same way. It was as if Lana was sacrificing herself because her friend left her. We know this because at the beginning we hear her friend saying "bye" as if she's gone forever and that Lana is just remembering all the good times they shared together. Her friend is ghost like, she's still there and we know this because when she's walking away we see a white shadow behind her. This shows us the audience that she'd always be there for her.

Taylor Swift – We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together

Establishing shot
This music video starts with an establishing shot showing us that the video is going to take place in a city with skyscrapers around small building. This is effective because it shows us the audience where the setting is.

The costume of the character in this music video is like the girl next door with her in her pyjamas which she makes her look young and innocent. This worked well and was effective because it shows how young she is and it goes with the song since she’s talking about relationships.

Split scene
This shows that they are both in different scenes and also that while he is talking to them he is unfaithful. This was effective because it shows that she is the typical housewife by being at home

This shot contradicts the song because the sign says “happy days” and the lyrics say that they will never get back together. This is effective because it goes with our music video because it goes with how they both shared good times but it never worked out well. Also the shot is in a forest or a park and it shows the nature side which shows everything seems perfect.

Audience - Point of view shot
This shot shows how the actress, Taylor Swift running away showing that she walking away from her relationship. This is effective because it shows us the audience our point of view from the shot. This also influenced our music video because it shows how the girl is running away from the past and into the future.

Close up
This shot shows the main actresses facial expression. This is effective because it shows us the audience how she feels. The actress is also looking directly at the audience as if she is talking to us this is useful because it includes the audience.

This shot shows that she is having a good time and that her break up did not effective her. She is moving on in her life and this is shown by through that she is having a party. Also this connects to the lyrics because it shows that it was her choice and that she deserves better. This also represents how she is a indepent female.

This shot is the repeated again at the end and the beginning of the music video. This is effective because it shows were it began and also ended. Somewhere she has made her decision through and also shows us how she looks through her window on the city when she is making her decision.

 Establishing shot
This music video ends with an establishing shot showing us that the video has ended and that she is still in a city with skyscrapers around small building. This is effective because it shows us the audience where the setting is.  Also showing us that she is looking out of the window to show that there is a big world out there and she does not need to waste her time with her previously partner.
